Medical Detox Manager
Safe Harbour Society for Health and Housing
Red Deer, Alberta
Safe Harbour Society for Health and Housing is one of Canada’s most unique and innovative community-based recovery organizations.
Based in Red Deer, Alberta, Safe Harbour supports individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health challenges, and housing instability through an integrated continuum of care that includes medical detox, stabilization, outreach, housing, diversion, and recovery supports. The organization is widely recognized for its low-barrier, recovery-oriented approach and its ability to support individuals with highly complex and overlapping needs.
As the only White Bison Certified treatment centre in Canada, Safe Harbour intentionally braids Indigenous knowledge, cultural practices, and healing traditions with Western medical approaches to recovery and stabilization. This integrated model shapes how services are delivered, how teams work together, and how recovery is experienced by clients across the organization.
Safe Harbour is now seeking a Medical Detox Manager to help lead the next evolution of its highly respected Medical Detox program.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Medical Detox Manager will provide operational, clinical, and team leadership for Safe Harbour’s 20-bed Medical Detox Unit within a highly dynamic, high-acuity environment.
This is not a traditional institutional healthcare leadership role. This role is deeply embedded within the program and requires a visible, hands-on leader who is comfortable operating at the intersection of clinical operations, client-facing leadership, crisis response, recovery-oriented care, and complex systems coordination. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting ongoing operational stability, strengthening team confidence and accountability, and helping shape the future of integrated detox and stabilization services within the organization.
The environment is fast paced, dynamic, and deeply meaningful. The Medical Detox Unit supports individuals experiencing substance use, mental health challenges, trauma, homelessness, and acute instability while helping connect clients to treatment, housing, recovery supports, and longer-term pathways to wellness.
This role offers the opportunity to lead within one of the strongest community-based detox programs in Canada while making meaningful impact within a mission-driven and evolving organization.
Key Responsibilities
The Medical Detox Manager will:
Lead the day-to-day operations of the Medical Detox Unit with a focus on clinical excellence, safety, consistency, and compassionate care
Provide visible leadership and support to nursing teams, case workers, supervisors, and client-facing staff
Foster a culture grounded in professionalism, accountability, collaboration, psychological safety, and trauma-informed practice
Support operational stabilization and help strengthen workflows, communication, documentation, and reporting practices
Ensure compliance with provincial standards, funding requirements, and clinical documentation expectations
Collaborate closely with physicians, hospitals, EMS, Recovery Alberta, Indigenous partners, treatment providers, and community organizations
Support continuity of care and transitions into treatment, housing, recovery programming, and community supports
Respond effectively to crisis situations, operational pressures, and evolving system-level challenges
Participate as a member of the Senior Management Team and contribute to broader organizational planning and growth
The Ideal Candidate
Safe Harbour is seeking a grounded, compassionate, and operationally strong healthcare leader who brings both clinical credibility and strong people leadership.
The successful candidate will be someone who thrives in dynamic environments, leads calmly under pressure, and is motivated by meaningful community impact rather than bureaucracy or hierarchy alone.
Candidates will bring:
An active and unrestricted Alberta licence as a Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP), or eligibility to obtain registration in Alberta prior to commencing employment, and be in good standing with the applicable Alberta regulatory body.
Three to five years of leadership experience within healthcare, addictions, detox, withdrawal management, mental health, acute care, or related community-based environments
Strong clinical judgment and the proven ability to lead effectively within high-acuity clinical settings
Experience balancing operational leadership, compliance, reporting, and quality assurance requirements
Strong communication, relationship-building, and team leadership capabilities
A trauma-informed, culturally safe, and recovery-oriented leadership approach
Emotional intelligence, resilience, flexibility, and sound judgment
Comfort navigating ambiguity, operational complexity, and ongoing change
Experience working with Indigenous communities, integrated recovery models, housing services, correctional health, emergency care, psychiatric care, or transitional stabilization programs will be considered strong assets.
Safe Harbour recognizes that exceptional candidates may come from a variety of clinical and recovery-focused backgrounds, including nursing, psychiatric care, addictions, community health, emergency response, or paramedicine.
Why Join Safe Harbour?
This is an opportunity to help shape the future of integrated detox, stabilization, and recovery services within Alberta.
Safe Harbour offers leaders the chance to influence how care is delivered, support vulnerable populations in meaningful ways, and work within an organization that values innovation, collaboration, cultural humility, and community impact.

Comprehensive benefits program
RRSP program
Four weeks of vacation
